Get climbing

Get Climbing initiative article in a paper news

Get Climbing is a social inclusion youth initiative funded and created by Mountaineering Ireland (MI) in Dublin in 2017. It is aimed at engaging young people in disadvantaged areas or circumstances into the sport of indoor and outdoor climbing. The Cork Climbing Club initiated and piloted the Get Climbing Cork initiative in October 2021 in Awesome Walls Cork and coordinates it locally through a voluntary committee, with the support of Mountaineering Ireland. Through the initiative, young participants are introduced to rock climbing skills indoors and outdoors with trained and qualified instructors. For those young people who develop a love for the sport, our aim is to support them to expand their understanding of the sport and support their access to climbing/career opportunities available to them in Ireland. On occasion, young people may be accompanied on outings and supported by fully vetted adult climbers volunteers from the Cork Climbing Club. Those volunteers have trained in child safeguarding and are volunteering under the supervision of the instructors.
